If your workers are having trouble finding accommodation for the season, you could consider signing up to The WAN or The Workforce Accommodation Network. The WAN is a community-focused online initiative that supports local growers and packers by connecting their seasonal workers with people in the community who have a spare room, sleepout, or holiday home that provides workers with safe, secure, and affordable accommodation.
Employers first need to register, write a little bit about themselves, and then list their workers who are seeking accommodation. An invitation is sent to the worker(s), inviting them to register and create a profile, which is linked with the business employing them. Once registered, a worker (roomer) can log in and view accommodation listings, and be connected to accommodation that is right for them.
A small one-off ‘successful match’ fee is charged to the employer when a roomer (worker) confirms they have secured accommodation.
This initiative has been set up to help alleviate the shortage of suitable seasonal worker accommodation in Central Otago.
