The work on the seasonal labour shortage we've undertaken in collaboration with government agencies, councils, industry organisations and HortNZ has, for many, helped alleviate the crisis we had all feared, at least for now. Current indications suggest there will be sufficient people available to harvest crops up until the end of December. We are constantly assessing the numbers to ensure our messaging and the work of our partners is targeted and accurately reflects the situation. We welcome your feedback in order to act effectively.
While the situation is exceptionally changeable, as an industry we need to engage clearly and quickly with all job applicants to ensure their expectations are managed openly and helpfully. New Zealanders have responded incredibly well to our request for workers so please ensure we respond to all job applicants.
Practically things all employers can do right now are:
- respond quickly to any applicants or approaches telling them your current situation
- ask if applicants would like to be contacted if you have any new vacancies
- advise applicants when you think you will need more staff and what factors will influence this
- suggest applicants get in touch with Tracey Mansfield if you have no work available.
As an industry we have created a huge amount of goodwill with the people of New Zealand and it is essential that we maintain this now and for future seasons.
