Spotlight on Xylella fastidiosa (Phony Peach Disease)

As mentioned at previous SummerGreen meetings, we mentioned a new development. We can now confirm the launch of our Xylella brand in partnership with other industry bodies and MPI.

This is the first step in our awareness campaign, helping growers understand what to look out for and why it matters.

What is Xylella?

Xylella fastidiosa is one of the world’s most serious plant diseases—and a major threat to New Zealand’s summerfruit industry. It’s the bacterium that causes phony peach disease.

Xylella blocks water movement in plants, causing leaf scorch, yellowing (chlorosis), dieback, and ultimately tree death. Overseas, it has devastated orchards and vineyards, and it can infect more than 600 plant species, including stonefruit, citrus, grapes, and their nurseries.

For summerfruit growers, the impact would be severe: weakened trees, lost crops, and orchards in long-term decline.

Protecting our orchards means protecting our future.
