Summerfruit NZ was part of the New Zealand Trade and Enterprises (NZTE) delegation to India in September.
‘Summerfruit is enjoying equal billing with apples, kiwifruit and other exports from New Zealand, which is great for our growers,’ says Summerfruit NZ Commercial Manager, Raj Singh, who joined this delegation and another horticulture trade delegation to India late last year.
‘This time round, New Zealand had a pavilion at World Food India as part of building a long-term relationship with this market. We were able to use the pavilion as a base to engage with our Indian counterparts.
‘Part of the attraction of New Zealand summerfruit is that it is counter seasonal to India’s supply, so we would not be competing with local growers.
‘New Zealand is working towards a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India that would offer tariff relief and a mandate around Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs).
‘We are also exploring tech transfer options although these discussions are in their infancy.’
